چکیده

Keynan, A. (University of Wisconsin, Madison), W. G. Murrell, and H. O. Halvorson. Germination properties of spores with low dipicolinic acid content. J. Bacteriol. 83:395-399. 1962.-When the dipicolinic acid content of spores of Bacillus cereus strain T is reduced from 7.5 to 2 or 3%, the spores germinate spontaneously after heat activation and are sluggish in their response to l-alanine and other germination agents. Only germination initiated by calcium dipicolinic acid is unaffected. l-Alanine-induced germination is stimulated by exogenous dipicolinic acid. These results support the hypothesis that endogenous dipicolinic acid regulates the l-alanine-triggered germination.

Induced release of dipicolinic acid from spores of Bacillus megaterium.

Conditions under which dipicolinic acid may be released from bacterial spores probably relate to the chemical state of the dipicolinic acid in the spore, to its physical location in the spore, and to its influence on the physiological properties of the spore. The latter aspect embraces the relation between release of dipicolinic acid and the viability of the spore, its heat resistance, and its ...

Bacillus thermoamylovorans Spores with Very-High-Level Heat Resistance Germinate Poorly in Rich Medium despite the Presence of ger Clusters but Efficiently upon Exposure to Calcium-Dipicolinic Acid.

High-level heat resistance of spores of Bacillus thermoamylovorans poses challenges to the food industry, as industrial sterilization processes may not inactivate such spores, resulting in food spoilage upon germination and outgrowth. In this study, the germination and heat resistance properties of spores of four food-spoiling isolates were determined. Flow cytometry counts of spores were much ...

Role of dipicolinic acid in the germination, stability, and viability of spores of Bacillus subtilis.

Spores of Bacillus subtilis spoVF strains that cannot synthesize dipicolinic acid (DPA) but take it up during sporulation were prepared in medium with various DPA concentrations, and the germination and viability of these spores as well as the DPA content in individual spores were measured. Levels of some other small molecules in DPA-less spores were also measured. These studies have allowed th...

Calcium dipicolinic acid-induced germination of Bacillus cereus spores.

Keynan, A. (University of Wisconsin, Madison) and H. O. Halvorson. Calcium dipicolinic acid-induced germination of Bacillus cereus spores. J. Bacteriol. 83:100-105. 1962.-The germination of spores of Bacillus cereus strain T can be initiated by calcium dipicolinic acid. The kinetics of germination are characterized by a long lag period followed by a rapid loss of refractility. The lag period di...

Characterization of Clostridium perfringens spores that lack SpoVA proteins and dipicolinic acid.

Spores of Clostridium perfringens possess high heat resistance, and when these spores germinate and return to active growth, they can cause gastrointestinal disease. Work with Bacillus subtilis has shown that the spore's dipicolinic acid (DPA) level can markedly influence both spore germination and resistance and that the proteins encoded by the spoVA operon are essential for DPA uptake by the ...
